The BMF belt was born as a callout and became a headliner. Nate Diaz coined it at UFC 241 in August 2019, after beating Anthony Pettis: he wanted Jorge Masvidal next for what he called the BMF belt. Dana White ran with it and commissioned a physical belt reportedly worth $50,000.

Six BMF fights have happened since. Four men have held the title. Here is every one.

The origin: UFC 244 — Masvidal vs. Diaz (Nov 2, 2019)

Masvidal never defended it. He lost his next four fights and retired in April 2023 after a loss to Gilbert Burns. The belt went dormant for nearly four years.

UFC 291 — Gaethje vs. Poirier 2 (Jul 29, 2023)

The UFC had revived the belt partly because it needed a title fight to headline the pay-per-view. Both men were undeniable candidates.

UFC 300 — Gaethje vs. Holloway (Apr 13, 2024)

Gaethje's reign ended in his first defense. The belt changed hands with one second to spare.

UFC 318 — Holloway vs. Poirier 3 (Jul 19, 2025)

This was the first successful BMF title defense in the belt's history — and the first BMF fight to go the full five rounds. Poirier retired with a 30-10 (1 NC) record.

UFC 326 — Oliveira vs. Holloway (Mar 7, 2026)

UFC 335 — Oliveira vs. Lopes (Dec 12, 2026)

Charles Oliveira (37-11, 1 NC) makes his first defense against Diego Lopes (28-8) in the UFC 335 main event at the T-Mobile Arena.

Lopes is moving up from featherweight, where he twice fought Alexander Volkanovski for the title. A win would make him the fifth BMF holder — and the first to take the belt from a fellow Brazilian. The Alex Pereira vs. Sergei Pavlovich heavyweight bout serves as the co-main event.

The BMF belt was supposed to be a one-off. Seven years later, it is headlining one of the biggest cards of 2026.
