Nine days out, UFC Vegas 124 lost its main event. Then it lost the replacement plan, too. And then, in the space of a few hours on Thursday, it got a completely different headliner.

Sean Brady is out of the November 7 main event against Gabriel Bonfim. No replacement opponent could be found for Bonfim in time. So instead of a welterweight headliner, the card now has a heavyweight one: Waldo Cortes-Acosta vs Johnny Walker. [1][2]

That is the reported booking, first broken by Brazilian journalist Laerte Viana and confirmed by multiple outlets. One honest caveat up front: as of Thursday night, the UFC had not officially announced the new fight, and outlets differ on whether it will be three or five rounds. [2][7]

How it fell apart

Brady explained it himself on his podcast, The BradyBags Show. A small cut on his knee turned into a swollen knee after a Tuesday training session, and doctors had to wait for the bacteria to grow before they could identify it. The diagnosis: a staph infection. [3]

He had wanted to fight again this year, but the remaining 2026 cards were either not an option or already full, so he is now targeting the UFC's January 16 card in Dallas. He also thinks the Bonfim fight could simply be rebooked, given how thin the top of the welterweight division is. [3]

Bonfim, meanwhile, is the man left holding nothing. He had won five straight, including a win over former champion Belal Muhammad, and this was his first UFC main event. Hours after the news broke, he posted a short statement on Instagram. [4]

"As some of you already know, my fight was canceled," he said. "On Nov. 7th I won't be fighting, unfortunately. But I believe there will be news coming soon and we keep going. The goal is just one: to be champion and we keep pushing." [4]

He said it on camera, too, in a selfie video posted to his own account on Thursday night — taking the cancellation, in the words of one Spanish-language account that clipped it, with humour. [8]

The new main event nobody planned

So the UFC went in a different direction entirely. Walker, who only just arrived at heavyweight, gets a main event in his second fight in the division. Cortes-Acosta, a top-10 heavyweight on a two-fight skid, gets a chance to stop the slide against one of the division's most unpredictable names. [1][2]

Walker made his heavyweight debut at UFC 332 earlier this month, flattening Mick Parkin with a knee in the first round. He had been telling people he expected his next fight in December, and had wanted Marcin Tybura next. Instead he got a headliner five weeks after his debut. [2][6]

Cortes-Acosta's recent run cuts the other way. He won three straight by stoppage, including knockouts of Derrick Lewis and Shamil Gaziev — the Gaziev finish came in Qatar on three days' notice — before dropping unanimous decisions to Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes. [1][5] He has stepped in on short notice before. This time he is the one holding the card together.

For Walker, the maths is simple: a win over a ranked heavyweight in a main event puts him in the division's top 10. For Cortes-Acosta, a loss to a man in his second heavyweight fight would be a very different kind of headline. [5]

The rest of the card carries on around them. The strawweight bout between Virna Jandiroba and Tatiana Suarez, a title eliminator in all but name, now becomes the co-main event by default. [5] And in a week the card would rather forget, it also lost Lucas Brennan to a torn ACL, leaving Austin Bashi without an opponent too. [1]

This is not the card anyone bought into. It might be a stranger one. The full November 7 card is on our UFC Vegas 124 event page, and the original head-to-head for the fight that fell apart is still up at Bonfim vs. Brady.
